Biography

İsmail Kara, one of the leading persons of modern Turkish thinking was born in 1955 in Rize. He is professor of Islamic Philosophy, History and Political Science. Publishing his first article, About the Economy of Islam, when he was nineteen; he is the writer of several monographies, reserach and studies as Notion of Islamism in Turkey (3 volumes, I: 1986, II: 1987, III: 1994), Political Opinions of Pan-Islamism (1994), Forming A Philosophy: Entrance of the terms Modern Philosophy and Science to Turkey (2001), Dictionnary of Güneyce-Rize (2001), Between Religion and Becoming Modern-Problems of Contemporary Turkish Thought (2003), Mevlevihane of Hania/Crete (2006) and his articles had been published in reviews, papers and translated in several languages including English, German and French. He is currently Professor in the Department of Islamic Philosophy at Marmara University Istanbul. In addition, he is one of the editors of Dergah Publishing and manages edition of various collections and books.

(Political Opinions of Pan-Islamism)
Today, the origins of political actions appearing in various expressions in Islam world are hidden in the history of modernism. Political Opinions of Pan-Islamism, in a Otoman-Istanbul centred manner, inclines to this question. The historical period is the first years of the Second Constitutional Monarchy where the strongest political discussions occured; 1908-1914. Main topics and concepts are: Constitutional Monarchy, Autocracy, the Caliphate, National Assembly, the Constitution, Political Party, Opposition. Topics in the background are: Governments of Abdülhamid the Second and the Political Party İttihat ve Terakki (Union and Progress), politization of Ulama and tariqas, modernizating fonctions of the Press.
İsmail Kara, with this study, has deserved Turkish Writers' Association Study Award in 1994.
