Biography

İnci Enginün was born in İstanbul on August 6, 1940, graduated from the Istanbul University where she took her Ph. Degree in 1968 with her thesis Translations and Influence of Shakespeare during the Tanzimat Period. She worked at the Department of the Turkish Language and Literature and became one of the best scholars in the field of Modern Turkish Literature. In 1982 she transferred to the newly establishing University of Marmara, and took several administrative posts until she retired in 1997. She had supervised several PhD. thesis and most of her students are working in various universities in Turkey.
Since her retirement she is much more active in her studies. She is the writer, editor or complier of over 60 books, and many articles. She has been awarded several times and the last was by the Elginkan Foundation, which she shared with Prof. Dr. Günay Kut of the Boğaziçi University. A Festschrift (İnci Enginün'e Armağan) was published with the contributions of her students, friends and colleagues (Dergâh Publishing, 1997).

Modern Turkish Literature-From Tanzimat to Republic 1839-1923
and
Turkish Literature During the Republican Period

İnci Enginün's various and continous studies yielded to two volumes of history of Turkish literature (Yeni Türk Edebiyatı -Tanzimat'tan Cumhuriyet'e- 1839-1923 (Modern Turkish Literature-From Tanzimat to Republic 1839-1923) and Cumhuriyet Dönemi Türk Edebiyatı (Turkish Literature During the Republican Period). Although she has not used the word of "history," these two books gave the whole story of the Turkish Literature beginning from 1859 to 2000. As a student of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar and Mehmet Kaplan, she dealt with the texts, not forgetting their cultural and historical background on which they florished. These two books are the main source for the Modern Turkish Literature.
