Ömer Seyfettin

Biography

Ömer Seyfettin (Gönen 1884-1920) is a very famous short story writer. He was trained in military school and fought in the Balkans. After the Balkan War, he started his writing career. Before then he wrote rather in the flowery style of the Servet-i Fünun tradition. His collaboration with Ali Canip Yöntem and Ziya Gökalp in the Genç Kalemler (Young Pens) started an evolution in the simplification of the Turkish Language and Literature. He was the writer of the famous article "The New Language" which was published under a question mark instead of Ömer Seyfettin. He did not only defend the new language but also wrote his stories in that way. His history provided him some of the subjects of his stories. His simple, plain, ironic language, bitter conceive of reality form his penetrating style. Since he died early he could not publish his stories and articles in a book form. But thanks partly to the efforts of his sincere friend Ali Canip and partly to his readers support he has become one of the most popular Turkish author. All of his works had been compiled and edited by Prof. Dr. Hülya Argunşah and published by the Dergâh Publishing in 7 volumes.

(Stories - Collected Works - 4 volume)

If Ömer Seyfettin had written nothing, we would have still been an important writer, just with his one article "Yeni Lisan" (New Language). This article was written at the right time and made great impact on the 20th century authors. He used the principles of the new language in his own stories beginning with "Bahar ve Kelebekler" (The Spring and Butterflies). He is no doubt the most admired story writer of the Turkish literature and has been read by all generations and partially started to be considered as an author of children.
