Biography

Mehmet Kaplan (Sivrihisar/Eskişehir 18 March 1915-İstanbul 23 January 1986) was a professor of Modern Turkish Literature in the Istanbul University. He was the student of Prof. Fuad Köprülü, Prof. Dr. Ali Nihad Tarlan and Prof. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, and wise enough to see the different approaches of them towards literature, and to individual literary texts. His reading of literary critics in French also helped him to understand and use different methods of approaching to the texts. His firm knowledge of literary history from the beginning of the first Turkish texts (7 th century) and the importance he gave to individual literary texts, made it possible to see the continuous chain of literary traditions within the Turkish societies. His introducing new methods in criticism to the Turkish texts made him very famous among his colleagues. He did not limit himself only with the historical works but also wrote critical detailed analysis as well as essays or reviews. He exercised great fame both as a teacher, scholar and critic, not only by his books but also by his students who are among the notable and famous scholars in Turkey.

Şiir Tahlilleri 1: Tanzimat'tan Cumhuriyet'e
(Analysis of Poems Vol.1: From Tanzimat to Republican)
Mehmet Kaplan was the first scholar who started text analysis in Turkey, which is quite different from the traditional interpretation. Şiir Tahlilleri I (Analysis of Poetry I) was written in 1952 was his first book of analizes, and became a classic text book for more than half a century. He is not famous only in Turkey by almost establishing a school beginning with Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, but known as a reliable, serious scholar among the Turcologists.
